Deputy Director – Public Health

Lynn Mello

Lynn Mello has been a Registered Nurse for 27 years and a Public Health Nurse for 16 years.  Lynn began her nursing education locally at Gavilan College and received her Bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Phoenix. She began her nursing career in hospitals, and was later accepted into the Peace Corps, where she was a rural nurse in a remote village in Paraguay. There she provided basic health care and first aid, worked with a midwife to promote prenatal care and safe births, conducted vaccination programs in schools and surrounding villages, and mobilized the community to improve health and hygiene through nutrition and sanitation.   She extended her Peace Corps service an extra year to work on a special emergency response flood project in Paraguay’s capital, Asunción. Upon her return to the United States, she promptly went to work in local hospitals and in public health.  Public health became her first occupational love. She has worked in San Benito, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz counties for the past 20 years in programs serving pregnant and post-partum women, adolescents, children with special medical needs, and foster children and families.  She has come full circle, returning to San Benito County where she (and her public health team) intend to promote a culture of vibrant health and well-being throughout the community.
